I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that his performance of “Freedom/Motherless Child” at Woodstock is among the best improvised live performances ever. An incredibly talented person has been lost.

Early on, Woodstock had been very hospitable to us. I had actually discovered the place long before moving there. …I had bought [a house] later on, and it was in this same house that intruders started to break in day and night. Tensions mounted almost immediately and peace was hard to come by. At one time the place had been a quiet refuge, but now, no more. Roadmaps to our homestead must have been posted in all fifty states for gangs of dropouts and druggies. Moochers showed up from as far away as California on pilgrimages. Goons were breaking into our place all hours of the night. At first, it was merely the nomadic homeless making illegal entry—seemed harmless enough, but then rogue radicals looking for the Prince of Protest began to arrive—unaccountable-looking characters, gargoyle-looking gals, scarecrows, stragglers looking to party, raid the pantry. Peter LaFarge, a folksinger friend of mine, had given me a couple of Colt single-shot repeater pistols, and I also had a clip-fed Winchester blasting rifle around, but it was awful to think about what could be done with those things. The authorities, the chief of police (Woodstock had about three cops) had told me that if anyone was shot accidentally or even shot at as a warning, it would be me that would be going to the lockup. Not only that, but creeps thumbing their boots across our roof could even take me to court if any of them fell off. This was so unsettling. I wanted to set fire to these people.

I think it’s fucking incredible that a korean language song is the most popular thing on the planet. Thats so good for humanity. Psy wrote and produced gangnam style himself and directed the video HIMSELF. No one made psy. psy is a genius and i dont think its so terrible that hes been recognized for this. It also doesn’t make him evil. His art is creating a generation of kids that will grow up seeing asian culture as being as valid as western culture which they currently don’t. I know because I grew up in Vancouver and half my high school was korean or chinese and the kind of shit i heard all the time was horrible. I used to walk around with my chinese boyfriend and people would yell slurs out of cars. Racism isn’t over. Sexism isn’t over. The only way things actually effect social change is by hitting the audience that perpetuates these ideas.

We were trying to decide where we fit in the spectrum of sub-genres, and we kind of concluded that we’re surrealist yuppies, because we’re really into mainstream pop music and hi-fi things and catchy things and making things awesome. We’re into working really hard and eating healthy food and exercising, and we’re also really into psychedelic experimentation and being weird.

A surrealist yuppie is a type of person who’s between the hipsters and the mainstream, who’s still doing creative things, but isn’t disdainful of mainstream success. Just because something is engineered by a bunch of guys in suits doesn’t make it necessarily bad.
