Obama and Hilary are not opposed to gay marriage. And Clinton was trying to pass more pro-gay legislation, but he had a Republican Congress, so he couldn't and had to settle with Don't Ask, Don't Tell and similar legislation. At least he got something through.

Neither Hillary nor Obama support gay marriage.

Obama: “I believe that marriage is the union between a man and a woman.” “I am not somebody who promotes same sex marriage but I do believe in civil unions.”

Hillary: “I think that the vast majority of Americans find [same-sex marriage] to be something they can’t agree with.” ”I think Vice President Cheney’s position on marriage is the right one.”

Bill Clinton supported two anti-gay policies: Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (which was finally appealed after gay rights groups opposed it for over a decade) and the Defense of Marriage Act (which gay rights groups are still opposing). Doing nothing at all would have been better than supporting either of these.
