Fighting fire with fire

I’m frequently amazed/disturbed by those who so casually dismiss the suffering and deaths of innocent victims of American foreign policy. If you don’t want to be the target of our bombs, some Americans claim, don’t “support” terrorist groups. If you don’t want your home destroyed or your family incinerated by drone strikes, don’t be physically near any suspected terrorists. Many offer such callous advice to their victims but until they can claim to have stood beneath a plummeting missile or to have been born into a life of poverty and oppression, they’d be wise to suspend their judgment.

The purpose of our Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is to aspire to policies better than that of torturers and murderers. It’s remarkable that some label terrorist groups “savages” and then turn around and argue that we, in turn, must respond with more savagery. We’re supposed to be better than that.

My philosophy class described innocent civilian deaths due to drone strikes as ‘collateral damage’.
